 Cataract & Refractive Surgery

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens. When we look at something, light rays travel into our eye through the pupil and are focused through the lens onto the retina, a layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. If the lens has become cloudy, this is called a cataract.



CATARACT TREATMENT

If your vision is only slightly blurry, a change in your eyeglass prescription may be all you need for a while. However, after changing your eyeglass prescription, if you are still not able to see well enough to do the things you like or need to do, you should consider cataract surgery. With cataract surgery, your eye's cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant (called an intraocular lens, or IOL). Your ophthalmologist will discuss the cataract surgery procedure, preparation for and recovery after surgery, the benefits and possible complications of cataract surgery, cataract surgery costs and other important information. Cataract surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight hospital stay.

DIAGNOSTIC FACILITIES

The clinic utilises different types of ultrasound scan like A-scan (IOL Master) and B-scan and also uses the popular Auto refractometer. All the above help gauge the intensity of the cataract and find the accurate Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) required.

Slit lamp

Your ophthalmologist will closely examine the eye’s cornea (see How the Eye Sees video above), iris, lens and the space between the iris and cornea. With this special microscope, the doctor is able to examine your eye in small, detailed sections, making it easier to spot abnormalities.

Retinal

When your eye is dilated, the pupils are wide open so the doctor can more clearly see the back of the eye. Using the slit lamp and / or an instrument called an ophthalmoscope, the doctor looks for signs of cataract. Your doctor will also look for signs of glaucoma and other potential problems with retina and optic nerve.

Refraction & Visual: Acuity Test

This test assesses the sharpness and clarity of your vision. Each eye is tested individually for the ability to see letters of varying sizes.

Autorefractrometer

During a comprehensive, dilated eye exam (where your pupil is widened with eye drops), your ophthalmologist will examine and test your eyes to make a cataract diagnosis.

A-scan (Immersion & IOL Master)

The A-scan probes into the eye, the sound waves creating spikes as it strikes of the impediments in the eye structure. The difference in spikes helps to arrive at the axial length of the eye which is conclusive to calculate the intraocular lens power to implant IOLs after cataract surgery.

B-Scan

B- scan is a cross sectional probe into the eye and it necessarily gives a cross sectional view of the eye. This proves helpful incases of advanced cataract, wherein the visibility of structures beyond the lens is obscure.

Treatment Procedures

The treatment procedures available at the clinic are different types of Micro Incision Surgeries (MICS) like Phacoemulsification. The clinic also has Torsional (Ozil) Phaco, cold phaco facility to completely eliminate the complications arising from a wound.

Phacoemulsification
It is one of the most preferred methods to extract cataract which has gained popularity in the last 2 decades. Ultrasonic frequency is used to vibrate a small hollow needle, usually made of titanium, and fixed to a hand piece containing a piezoelectric crystal. This breaks the cataract into small pieces that can be taken out through the keyhole incision. After doing so, an artificial lens (intraocular lens) is injected through the same incision. The technique does not need hospitalization and visual rehabilitation is possible in a week time.
Femto Second Laser Assisted Micro Incision (MICS)
